Updated for 2018, this book is designed primarily for writers - or new writers - who desire a better understanding of ideal story structure. “The Writer and the Hero’s Journey” is a complete manual for fiction writing mastery. This book will change your writing life forever - for the better.

Rob Parnell, bestselling author of a dozen acclaimed writing manuals, brings you a unique book that examines the hero’s journey and its importance to you, the writer, and all your fiction writing, no matter which genre is your speciality.

Have you ever wanted to be able to structure a short story or novel around your hero/heroine? If so, then using Rob Parnell’s modern interpretation of "The Hero's Journey" as a template is a sure-fire way to create a popular bestseller!

Here's what this groundbreaking new course reveals

Module One Mindset of a Hero
Telling a compelling story means first establishing its parameters. Discover simple and effective ways to start a story that will always engender empathy from your reader. In this first module we examine the hero's character and motivation and the symbolic 'call to action', the hero’s metaphorical separation from the ordinary world, leading him/her to take the necessary plot arc to fulfill the hero’s agenda and reach his/her inner and outer goals.

Module Two Emergence
In any good story, a character must transcend his/her normal existence and be tested. This is the only way to ensure growth - and eventual satisfactory plot resolution. In this module we discover the ‘rules’ on how this metaphorical transformation can and must begin at the quarter point of the hero's journey. There's a tried and true formula for this part of your writing and using solid, familiar examples, you’ll see how many great authors create this scenario.

Module Three Road of Trials
Writing is not just a way of entertaining readers, it is also a spiritual journey of enlightenment for the writer. At the midpoint in a story both the hero and the writer must be stretched to the limits of their imagination. In this module we explore the transformation of the hero and the writer at this crucial plot point. And how we can use simple guidelines to ensure the reader is transported by our story, its plot elements and our character arcs.

Module Four Master of Worlds
The character's ultimate reward - and thereby the reader's sense of satisfaction - is based on the hero’s ability to overcome appropriate obstacles and achieve the agendas set out at the beginning of the story. In this module we learn how to structure and resolve character development. How you create endings that leave your reader gasping, crying, triumphant and begging for more! It's all part of the hero's journey.

PLUS

* Each module is followed by practical exercises that will help strengthen your understanding of the hero’s journey and enable you to plan and execute brilliant story ideas with compelling characters.

* Throughout the course we look at examples from novels, movies and classic stories from all genres to illustrate the principles of the hero's journey - and how you can use them effectively in your own stories.

* We examine the importance of the hero’s journey in the context of writing, writers and in the metaphorical process of becoming a professional artist.

* The Major Arcana of the Tarot pack is revealed as an exact match for the hero’s journey. We learn what this means and what you can learn from it. Also, how to come up with fascinating characters and original story plots by using a humble Tarot pack.

* The author reveals the confidential secrets to his own writing success - so that you have practical examples you can apply to your own writer’s journey.

* And much more - all told with the style, panache and wit you'd expect from Rob Parnell, the ‘world’s foremost writing guru.’

Part inspirational advice, part writing guide, in 'The Writer and the Hero's Journey,' Bob Parnell tackles the topic of the hero's quest mono-myth. First popularized in the writings of Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell, for those unfamiliar, the hero's journey follows a specific sequence of stages. These include the summons to go on a quest, crossing the threshold between a familiar and unfamiliar world, enduring tests including a climatic ordeal, and then a return home with a reward. Elements of the heroes quest can be seen in the lives of Jesus and Gautama Siddhartha as well as contemporary heroes. Indeed, most myths and literary novels follow the heroes quest to such an extent that writing coaches have created a formulaic approach for beginning writers, with the hope that by providing a road map, they will assist a fledgeling writer in finding their way to a best selling novel.

Whether writers should write to a pre-made pattern, or adopt a 'stream of consciousness' approach to writing popularized by James Joyce, is a matter of debate. For those choosing a formulaic approach there are many writing guides out there to choose from.

Along this vein, Mr. Parnell brings to the table testimony on how the writers life often follows the adventures of the novelist's protagonist. His other contribution is demonstrating how the tarot deck symbolizes the heroes journey. Going into detail on the symbolism of the Tarot arcana, he illustrates how a beginning writer can draw inspiration through the images of a Tarot deck to assist them in stages of the writing process. Finally, his message about self publishing is motivational to would be writers.

I found Mr. Parnell's life story and the biographies of other authors inspiring. I also was intrigued by the creative uses of a Tarot deck, learning about the rich symbolism contained within. Still, having read 'The Hero with a Thousand Faces,' by Joseph Campbell, as well as other writing guides, I did not find much new material here. For new readers of writing guides, Bob Parnell's book could provide a good initiation. However, once you have processed Mr. Parnell's advice, 'Stealing Fire from the Gods,' by James Bonnet will be much more rewarding.

The Writer The Hero Journey The Easy Way to Write Book 2 edition by Rob Parnell Reference eBooks Reviews

Rob Parnell's 'The Writer and the Hero's Journey' is very inspiring. The clock of the hero's journey, divided into four quarters, is not only inspiring, but gave me the confidence that I am doing many if the things Rob is talking about with success. The bonus is the realization that from his insight and some of the details and suggestions in each quarter, I can continue to grow my writing by incorporating some of those building blocks. As I read on, I was getting visions and images from my own characters as to where they wanted to go, and how their story would move forward. I am greatly energized by Rob book. He woke me up and allowed me to imagine more possibilities of how my story can keep building and advancing scenes and as to where the story may go. Thank you, Rob. I am a believer in you and your books (I have several).

I have read many other books on plotting, outlining, imaging, planning and general writing by many authors. At this time I think Rob's was one of the most inspirational to help me get over a hump I was encountering in the storyline (not writer's block). I am sure there are some books out there that can do better, but for my money, Rob's book came at a very good time in my writing. Wish me luck!
I've always been interested in Joseph Campbell's "The Hero's Journey," but found it difficult to get through. Many years ago, I was at a writers' conference and there was a workshop on the Hero's Journey. The author gave us a quick run-down of the 12 stages. I took notes and created a brief outline but no details so it's been difficult to implement.

This book, "The Writer & The Hero's Journey," fills in all of the gaps. In addition to explaining the 12 stages, he gives examples of them from current movies and books so the reader can see how seamlessly they flow. Parnell also shares his personal journey which, in a lot of ways, also follows the Journey.

The only part of the book that I didn't care for - and it's strictly a personal issue - was a description of each of the Tarot cards and how to use them for character and plot development. I have nothing against Tarot cards, but they don't interest me. They didn't seem to fit with the rest of the book, and I thought they should have been presented as a book of their own. These sections were clearly marked and I was able to easily skip them.

Overall, this is an educational and enjoyable look at story structure. It's written so well that I would recommend it to readers, who may enjoy recognizing the Hero's Journey in movies and books, as well as writers.
I was inspired by "The Writer and the Hero's Journey". I have struggled through most of my life wanting to step out of my comfort zone and reach for my dreams, but have held myself back out of fear. This is a struggle I believe most of us face each and every day. Some of us are satisfied with their daily routine of work, family, recreation, etc. Unfortunately, I am not one of those people.

Recently, life threw me a curve-ball, and I found myself having to question the routine I had locked myself into for years. Thankfully, at around the same time, I discovered this book. While reading this book, I saw a lot of the same struggles that I had faced and am facing reflected in the Hero's Journey. What is funny is that the Hero's Journey is really our journey as the human race. Each of us is a hero. We face the same challenges and struggle with the same uncertainties as the heroes of legend, just in different forms. "The Writer and the Hero's Journey" has inspired me to reach for my dream of becoming a professional writer despite the opposition I will have to face.

I recommend this book to writers just starting their journey like I am, and also to seasoned professionals who have walked the road many times, but may be looking for a different perspective. An excellent and insightful read!
